Sri Lanka is famous all over the world for gems. The holy bible and the book 1001 Arab Nights are also witnessing the pride of Sri Lankan gems. Further, the largest sapphire in the British Crown is the Blue Belle of Asia, found in Ratnapura, Sri Lanka. Interestingly, the famous Panther Brooch made by Cartier in the 1930sfor the Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson, holds another Sri Lankan sapphire of 152.35 carats.
A curious phenomenon about Sri Lankan gem pits is that a variety of gems are usually found together. There always seems to be an associated collection of spinels, corundums (sapphire and ruby) and star stones. Aquamarines, tourmalines, topaz, garnets, amethyst, cats’ eyes and zircons are also found here. Most outstanding of all are the glistering rubies and sapphires for which Sri Lanka has been one of the oldest sources in the world.
The methods used today are the same as when the first precious stones were mined. A miner, clad only with a loin cloth, sinks into a pit of more than 30ft to search for his luck in water- borne gravel called Illam. All that is required patience, excellent eyesight, a tolerance of damp working conditions and a great deal of luck.
